Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Health and Insurance Committee held their regular meeting on Tuesday and discussed a variety of topics.
An update was provided on the Health Department building, detailing the plan to install electric locks, cameras, and improve lighting for the main Effingham office. An update was also provided on receiving grants. The Board reports a Respiratory Surveillance Grant was received and is slated to be used to help with covid relief for people suffering from lingering symptoms and vaccination shots.
Lots of discussion was had over how to help get the public’s trust in vaccines again. The Board expressed frustration over how vaccines are looked at after Covid, and how to convince people they are safe, especially for school children. Norbert Soldtwedel mentioned there is an outbreak of measles starting up in Chicago, and he was looking for ways to prevent it from spreading locally. The consensus was to inform people as best as possible with the scientific evidence, since it is ultimately a parent choice.
The Board also discussed the growing tick problem, stating to always be on the lookout for ticks. The Board advised that the Health Department will only take ticks that have not bitten a person yet for them to be tested. The rise in bird flu was also discussed. The Board mentioned to keep an eye out for birds that died in an unusual way, or there is no sign as to why the bird died. Those birds should be bagged and sent to the Health Department.
