Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Beaches across the country are being shut down for the holidays because of high bacteria levels.
Officials in at least ten states have either closed beaches or are warning people to not swim in the water. Some of the closures are due to fecal waste while some are due to high levels of blue-green algae. Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and New York have all reported unsafe levels of waste at certain beaches. High bacteria levels have also been reported at beaches in California, Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia.
