Springfield, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The country was witness to history this weekend as the current sitting president announced he will not seek a second term, making him the 5th President not to seek a second term, not including those who died before their term was up. The last one was Lyndon B. Johnson 56 years ago in 1968.
President Biden has put his full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, endorsing her shortly after he announced he is not seeking re-election. But the question is: What will the delegates that were committed to Joe Biden do? As of this moment, they have said they will support Harris. If that is the case, what effect will it have on the state and local level? What changes will be made, if any, as the Democratic Party makes this transition?
Illinois State Board Of Elections Spokesperson Matt Dietrich gave more details, explaining that the process will remain the same until the Democratic National Convention.
Dieterich also discussed what the Primary Election results mean for the General Election, and if there are any laws on this precedent.
At this moment, VP Harris looks to be the presumptive nominee. But as Matt Dietrich stated, it is ultimately up to the party, and the delegates, to determine who will come out of the DNC as the nominee to run against Donald Trump in the General Election.
