Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- On Thursday, October 3 at 6:00 PM on the second floor of the Effingham County Cultural Center and Museum, Dr. Edmund Wehrle, Professor of History at Eastern Illinois University, will deliver a program observing the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Shortly after midnight on the morning of Tuesday, June 6, 1944 the invasion of Normandy began with extensive aerial and naval bombardment. There was an airborne assault as well as the landing of 24,000 American, British, and Canadian airborne troops. Codenamed “Operation Neptune,” D Day is the largest seaborne invasion in history and began the liberation of France as well as Western Europe during World War II.
Join Dr. Edmund Wehrle as he leads an informational program on the anniversary of this historic event. The presentation is the result of a partnership between the Effingham Public Library and the Museum. Dr. Wehrle is a Professor of History at Eastern Illinois University, where he has taught since 2000. He has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and is author of Between a River and a Mountain: The AFL-CIO and the Vietnam War and coauthor of America in the World: Ideas, Trade and Warfare. His latest book is Breaking Babe Ruth: Baseball’s Two Decade Campaign against Its Greatest Star. Dr. Wehrle earned both his M.A. and PhD from University of Maryland at College Park.
