Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham County Tax & Finance Committee held a special meeting Tuesday to go over the year’s budget and take last-minute requests for funding from local entities. Also part of the discussion was the tax levy for the upcoming year.
Norbert Soldtwedel started by stating that keeping increases in funding below 5% will prevent a truth and taxation hearing from needing to be held. The goal is to keep any new spending below $300k.
Michael Tate with the 377 Board addressed the Committee asking for an additional $20k to help the program run through Community Support Systems make ends meet and help all those in the program continue to get the help they need. The main reason for the ask is to help the families with housing costs. Jeff Workman, Effingham County Health Department Administrator, also addressed the Committee asking for an increase in yearly funding from $192k to $300k. He said this will help the department provide competitive wages to hire more staff.
The Committee also acted on insurance for County employees. They approved an HSA one-time payment of $1650 and $1k for each employee to help with insurance premiums. The move to HopeTrust insurance was fully approved.
The Tax and Finance Committee will meet again tomorrow to further discuss these items, and the budget will likely be revisited at the full County Board meeting Monday.
